District agrees to contract (03/25/08)
Jay County Solid Waste District
By By MIKE SNYDER-
The biggest annual expense for an organization promoting county recycling efforts will increase about 3.6 percent over the third and fourth years of a four-year deal.
Members of the Jay County Solid Waste District approved a four-year contract with Waste Management of Indiana for hauling of boxes used in the district's Saturday drop-off recycling program.
The new contract, effective May 1 through April 30, 2012, calls for a per-haul fee plus a fee based on the weight of recyclable items collected.
In the first two years, the charges will be $180 per haul and $28 per ton, while in years three and four the per-haul fee is upped to $192.60 and $206.08, and the tonnage fee increases to $29.96 and $32.06.
Currently, the district pays $240 per haul, plus a fuel surcharge. In 2007, the district paid approximately $51,000 in hauling fees and a fuel surcharge of approximately $3,600.
Kay Hayes, director of the district, said Monday the average recyling collection box holds approximately two tons. Using that average, the average fee per-haul would be $236 under the first two years of the contract.
In other business Monday, board members Gerald Kirby, Bill Gibson, Faron Parr, Gary Theurer, Milo Miller Jr. and Ron Hunt:
•Approved monthly claims totaling $28,238.31. Those claims included more than $9,000 paid to not-for-profit groups that staff the Saturday collection sites. After paying claims, the district has $118,937.13 in its checking account, and $51,354.20 in an investment account.
•Learned the district received $20,355 in income during February. That income is from a $1.25 per-ton fee on trash deposited in the Jay County Landfill. The fee is collected and paid to the district by Waste Management, which owns and operates the landfill.
•Heard Hayes report that she and administrative assistant Jill Hall did a total of 25 presentations over the past several weeks on earthworms and their importance to the Earth's ecosystem. Many of the presentations were done at county elementary schools in connection with agriculture week.
The district also had a booth at the Jay County Business Expo March 8-9 at Jay County High School.[[In-content Ad]]
