District agrees to new hauling pact (05/22/07)
Jay County Solild Waste District
By By MIKE SNYDER-
The cancellation of a contract for pick-up of recycled materials at county schools was made a bit easier to swallow by a deal with a new company for a lower price.
Members of the Jay County Solid Waste District board of directors wasted little time in approving a contract with Rumpke Recycling to collect items at all nine Jay County schools.
Rumpke, which recently won the curbside recycling contract in the city of Portland, will use the same rear-loading trucks to collect from the schools, which use dumpsters of 8 cubic yards or less.
The maximum price the district will pay is $59 per month for twice-weekly collection from an 8 cubic yard dumpster.
District director Kay Hayes said Monday that she was notified recently by an official from Waste Management that the company was canceling its contract effective June 1.
Waste Management formerly provided curbside recycling service in Portland and collected the school recycling during the same trip for curbside collection.
Also Monday, board members Bill Gibson, Gerald Kirby, Bruce Hosier, Faron Parr, Gary Theurer and Milo Miller Jr. were reminded by Hayes that the district's free shredding day will be Thursday at district headquarters, 5948 West Ind. 67, across from the Jay County Landfill.
Hours for the service will be 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Items that may not be shredded include compact discs, hard drives, microfilm, microfiche, biohazards and cardboard.[[In-content Ad]]
