District OK's request to fund Dunkirk sign (09/26/06)

Jay County Sold Waste District

By By MARY ANN LEWIS-

In an effort to attract more tourism to Dunkirk's Glass Museum, members of the Jay County Solid Waste District board agreed Monday afternoon to purchase a sign to place in the front lawn of the district site on Ind. 67 encouraging motorists to visit the western Jay County community.

Ailesia Franklin, a member of the Dunkirk Improvement Committee, and director of the glass museum, addressed board members and explained the committee has plans for placing 27 signs on highways around the county, to help direct tourists to Dunkirk.

She explained at $250 per sign, the total cost of purchasing and installing the 16-inch by 72-inch signs through Display Craft in Portland has been set at about $7,000.

Franklin said a benefactor has already offered to provide half the cost of the signs and the committee is working to come up with the balance.

"Any help you can give us would be great," she told the board. "What benefits Dunkirk, benefits Jay County."

"I'd like to be able to buy all the signs," said board member, Gerald Kirby, "but I'm not opening Pandora's box."

Board members discussed placing the directional signage on the current sign at the front of the office building near the highway but not on the right-of-way.

Also Monday, the board heard director Kay Hayes say she is currently working on completing paperwork for the Indiana Department of Environmental Management PEP grant.

The non-competitive grant is awarded annually to counties around the state for public education and promoting recycling. In 2005 the district received $8,701 and is expected to receive $8,700 this year.

The board also approved donating a hand-shaped chair to the West Jay Optimist Club for an upcoming Kids For Cancer benefit.

Additionally Monday, the board reminded residents of Tox-A-Way Day to be held Oct. 28, at the Jay County Fairgrounds. Residents will be able to take items there between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Leon Leach, district manager for Waste Management of Ind. who is in charge of operations at the Jay County Landfill, also reminded residents that a free day will be held at the landfill on Saturday, Oct. 7, from 7 to 3 p.m. when residents may dump at no charge.

In the financial report, Hayes said claims for August totaled $19,256.18 and the district shows a bank balance of $140,649.04.

There were 23,501.53 tons of solid waste delivered to the landfill in August and of that total, 8,176 was exempt from the district fee. The waste district received $18,965. The district receives $1.25 for each ton of trash dumped in the Jay County Landfill.[[In-content Ad]]
