Don't be misled by mailings (10/25/2008)
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
I want to address the District 33 race for state representative between incumbent Bill Davis and challenger Andy Schemenaur.
I've been receiving, as I am sure many of you have, a number of negative mailers from Andy Schemenaur and the Democrat Party.
These mailers all reference bill numbers toward the bottom of each piece. It is important that you as the voters in District 33 know 80 to 90 percent of the information cited at the bottom of the mailers does not involve a final vote on a bill. Instead, many of the references cited are for votes cast on a "ruling of the chair."
Simply put, that usually means that a representative tried to attach or amend one piece of legislation into another and the Speaker of the House had to "rule" whether or not that should be allowed. A vote is then cast b all the representatives "for" or "against" that "ruling of the chair."
These are the so-called votes Andy Schemenaur is using in his mailings. These are not the votes on the final bill.
The bills that come before the General Assembly are extremely important and most of the issues take time and a great deal of thought and study. They are important to you and your family.
As a former state representative, I believe this to be deceiving and not helpful to the voting public.

Facts?
To the editor:
Just wanted to clear up some of the "facts?" that were written in the letter to you that was published Wednesday, Oct. 22, in The Commercial Review. It was the letter responding to the (Stephen) Erwin letter (which ran Oct. 11).
I was certain, after reading the letter by Mr. Priest, that I had read that Obama voted four times against legislation in the Illinois State Senate that would have provided care and protection for babies who are born alive after an abortion.
Upon researching this, I had come to find that the Illinois Born-Alive Infants Protection Act was a simple three sentence bill to establish that every baby who achieved "complete expulsion or extraction" from the mother, and who showed defined signs of life, was to enjoy the legal protection as a "person."
As state senator, Obama led the opposition to this bill in 2001, 2002, and 2003.
On March 13, 2003, Obama killed the bill at a committee meeting over which he presided as chairman. For more facts, visit www.nrlc.org. Most all information from this letter can be found there.
What this means to me is Sen. Obama believes babies born alive after a botched abortion should be left to die. That this living human being doesn't have rights - human rights. What about human dignity? It sickens me to know that human beings can kill defenseless babies (born or unborn) and vote to make it lawful to do so.
Obama has also voted against legislation that would prohibit tax dollars to pay for abortions and advocates cutting off all federal aid to crisis pregnancy care centers.
Our hard-earned tax dollars paying for what many consider "murder" and denied to those promoting "life." May God have mercy on these people, for I believe they don't know what they're doing!
Please vote this Nov. 4. Vote for human dignity and human rights.
Vote pro-life!
