Don't wait to do good
Editorial
The massive winter storm that rolled through the Midwest this week struck only a glancing blow to Jay and surrounding counties, but there were still plenty of us that needed a helping hand in one way or another.
And this community, as it always does, surely stepped in to meet those needs in a thousand unseen ways.
Early Thursday afternoon, it was a group of citizens — including several employees of the Portland Water Department — stopping to assist a couple whose car had slid off Wayne Street and on top of a 2-foot pile of ice-crusted snow.
Digging footholds in front of the car, the men made short work of pushing the car back onto the street, bringing a repeated chorus of “thank you” from the grateful driver.
Similar scenes have been played out over the past few days, with neighbors checking on their elderly neighbors; a Good Samaritan using a snowblower to clear others’ sidewalks or driveways; or other random acts of kindness.
It’s those acts that make individuals and communities special.
But sometimes it seems as if it takes tough times to bring out the best in us. Imagine how good it would feel if we all went out of our way to do for others every day of the year. — M.S.[[In-content Ad]]
