Downtown Halloween event a big success (11/08/05)

Letters to the editor

To the editor:

I want to thank the Portland community for supporting the downtown businesses on Oct. 31. This is the first year we have had a community Halloween party, and we had a wonderful turnout for our open houses and trick-or-treating.

We wanted to offer a safe and fun way for kids and adults to trick-or-treat, and I believe we succeeded and hope that we will be able to continue to offer this in the coming years.

I also want to thank the following businesses for participating: B&S Excursions, Corle Insurance Agency, Evans’ Fine Jewelry, First National Bank, Funk-Layman Real Estate and Appraisal, Hunt’s Emporium, Jay County Development Corporation, Mutual Security, Patriot Sportswear and Embroidery, Porter-Takats Insurance and Real Estate, Sharlette’s Fudgery, Sugar ‘N Slice, The Flower Nook and The Glass Bonsai. A special thanks to Sandy Schwieterman from Evans’ Fine Jewelry and Kari Griffith from Sugar ‘N Slice for assisting in the organization of this event.

Downtown Portland has a great and varied business community, and we hope that the community had a chance to become reacquainted with the offerings of our business establishments. We want to continue to offer events such as this, and we ask that you continue to shop in downtown Portland.

Again, thanks to all who participated and kept their businesses open late on Halloween and thanks most of all to those who attended and support our community.

More to the story

To the editor:

My name is Mindy McCowan. I am an inmate at Rockville Women’s Prison, but am currently being held at the Jay County Jail. I’ve been here since Sept. 26.

I came back here for a modification of my sentence.

When I went to court they denied my modification and said that they would decide depending on my testimony against my co-defendant Larry Best Jr.

Well, there was an article printed in the newspaper about Larry’s trial and it stated that I was one of the witnesses that testified.

I was, but what the story failed to mention was that I testified for about an hour for my co-defendant Larry Best Jr.

I was considered a hostile witness because I did not testify on their behalf. The paper made it sound like I testified against him.

I will be doing the remainder of my sentence because of helping my co-defendant.

I would really appreciate it if this could get printed so I can clear my name.

Thank you.
