Dr. Galbraith will be missed (06/09/06)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

Indiana physicians and their patients have suffered a significant loss with the passing of Dr. Kathleen A. Galbraith, a family practice physician from Portland in Jay County.

The sadness felt by her local community is echoed across the state because Dr. Galbraith was an important leader with the Indiana State Medical Association.

Always the voice of reason, she used her enthusiasm and dedication to improve the health care environment for Hoosier patients and physicians.

She will be sorely missed. Yet, we will long appreciate her legacy of caring evidence by her untiring work with key organizations at the local, county and state levels. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, her patients and her colleagues in this time of grief.

Kevin Burke, M.D.,

president, Indiana State

Medical Association

Historic thanks

To the editor:

Headwaters Heritage Inc., your Jay County Historic Preservation Group, would like to thank the participants in the Historic Preservation Week activities recently observed for 2006.

The renovation work now being done at the Weiler Building is already generating visual excitement and anticipation within our community.

We also want to thank those individuals who have taken upon themselves the unique challenges and rewards of preserving, restoring or protecting some of our best local landmarks.

A few of those individuals were honored in a special exhibit at the Jay County Public Library in conjunction with our 10th annual children’s drawing contest for local third and fourth grade students. They draw their favorite historic building and state why this building is important to them.

In communities large or small, local landmarks are in constant danger unless some group or individual decides to protect them. Time and the elements of nature claim many landmarks when their owners fail to adequately preserve them. The annual children’s drawing contest is our way of proving to the community that local landmarks mean something — even to children. The buildings provoke memories for adults and leave lasting impressions upon our children. Thus we need to preserve our local landmarks for future generations to enjoy.

So we thank the Jay School Board, Mrs. Barbara Downing and staff, and the elementary school principals and teachers of the third and fourth grade classes for their interest in preserving Jay County architecture through participation in our annual drawing contest. Also a special thank you to the Jay County Public Library and their friendly staff for providing the perfect location for the exhibit each year.

This year’s winners are:

Bloomfield: 1st — Annie Graber; 2nd — Ali Inman; 3rd — Zachary Metcalf.

East: 1st — Michael Bruggeman; 2nd — Lindsey Green; 3rd — Madison Long.

General Shanks: 1st — Shannon Waters; 2nd Kady Betts; 3rd — Catherine Dunn.

Judge Haynes: 1st — Pedro Caster; 2nd — Jordan Ualangeon; 3rd — Haley Stone.

Pennville: 1st — Brittany Cart; 2nd — Trevor Berry; 3rd — Jarod McIntire.

Westlawn: 1st — Takoa Knight; 2nd — Tiffany Barton; 3rd — Rylee Clemmons.

Special recognition to Betsey Huffman and Ayami Kageyama for excellence in drawing and in understanding the history of the buildings that they chose.

The strip malls and “big box stores” are an asset to the community and provide a foundation for economic growth. But landmarks and a revitalized downtown provide our community with heritage and personality. They set us apart from other communities, which stimulates tourism and personal identity. An old house or an old building is so much more than just another building. It’s a special community asset linking our past to our present.

We hope you had a chance to visit our exhibit at the Jay County Library to witness the progress being made by your friends and neighbors to protect some of our best local landmarks. If not, then we encourage you to see it at the Jay County Historical Society Museum located on East Main Street in Portland.

Respectfully submitted,

Gregory Bubp
