Drive set to honor officers
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
Throughout the month of June in communities all across the state, American Red Cross blood drives are taking place to honor fallen officers.
The Indiana Fallen Officer Blood Drive campaign was founded by Janice Starnes, whose husband, Sgt. Daniel Starnes, was killed in the line of duty in 2001. According to Starnes, “The campaign helps ensure fallen officers are not forgotten while also raising awareness of the dangers officers face every day and the need for blood.”
June is a difficult month to collect blood due to many families traveling and schools being out of session. There is never a bad time to give blood, but during June it is especially needed.
Local law enforcement, fire departments, EMS, first responders and community supporters will participate in this meaningful tribute to our fallen heroes.
Our community will take part in the Fallen Officer campaign with a blood drive on Tuesday, June 25 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Jay Community Center, 115 E. Water St., Portland. Our goal is to collect at least 85 units of blood.
I hope you will join us in honoring fallen officers by giving the gift of life on June 25. To schedule a blood donation appointment, please call (800) 448-3543 or go to www.redcrossblood.org, sponsor code “jcommc.”
