Dunkirk trash charge amounts to new tax (08/11/06)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

Subject: "New Tax."

The Dunkirk mayor and council are considering adding $8 to our water bills - a "water tax."

This will pay for trash collection which now comes out of property tax revenue. Will my property tax go down $8 now? No.

A change in how it is collected the mayor said. No, a new tax. What are the plans for that amount from the property tax revenue, as it will still be collected .

Good for Dunkirk? A phrase I hear a lot; I don't think so. People on fixed incomes won't either. You just added to their budgets.

What is the real reason for doing this?

It is said Democrats are for "the working people." Well they are. We will have to work more to pay this new tax.

Not long ago they talked of cutting the town budget. Now they have added to my budget.

Thank you.

Fair thanks

To the editor:

Tri-Kappa sorority would like to congratulate the Jay County Fair Board for another fantastic fair. Our sorority thanks you for letting us play a small part in the fair.

Tri-Kappa is involved with taking tickets and ushering you to your seats during the events in the grandstands and track seating.

With the fair board's help we are able to raise money so we can give it away to help other community organizations and needs.

Thank you fair board, Tri-Kappa associates, inactive members and active members, for all of your help and hard work this year.

We greatly appreciate you.

Sincerely,

Sarah Lee, Rebecca Frazee and Lisa Barnett, Tri-Kappa Fair Committee

Dunkirk Depot

To the editor:

The old P.R.R. (Pennsylvania Railroad) Depot in Dunkirk has a lot of personal fond memories for me.

You see my father, Charlie K. Field, Sr., worked there as a telegraph operator.

He was born in Dunkirk and returned there in 1931, and that is when I entered the 7th grade at the Dunkirk High School building.

We remained there through my high school days, graduating in June 1937. My parents lived in Dunkirk until their death.

I often visited the depot and we boarded passenger trains there for Marion, Chicago, New York and Altoona, Pa., to name a few.

I hope the community and D.H.S. Alumni do get behind the effort to turn the depot into a museum.

Aloma Whitesell's letter (in the July 12 edition of The News and Sun) is to the point, and I urge everyone to help make this happen for Dunkirk.

Sincerely,

Dr. Charlie K. Field, (PhD)
