Election is Tuesday
Although several hundred Jay County residents have already cast ballots, many of us will head to the polls on Tuesday to make choices at the federal, state, county and township level, along with representatives to the Jay School Board.
Also included in Tuesday’s Indiana election will be a ballot measure seeking to make property tax caps part of Indiana’s Constitution, along with four school board races and questions on retaining several judges from the Indiana Court of Appeals.
Polls open Tuesday at 6 a.m. and close at 6 p.m.
Voters in Fort Recovery, in addition to many federal, state and local races, will also be voting on local funding for a new high school. If approved, the new building will be constructed near the district’s middle/elementary school with a 50 percent state match.
At the top of the ticket in Indiana is the race for U.S. Senate between former Senator Dan Coats, a Republican, Democrat Brad Ellsworth and Libertarian Rebecca Sink-Burris.
The other Congressional race locally has been a quiet one, as long-time incumbent Republican Mike Pence has faced little challenge from Democrat Barry Welsh or Libertarian TJ D. Thompson Jr.
State races of note locally include incumbent District 33 State Rep. Bill Davis (R-Portland) facing a challenge from Redkey Democrat Ron Liggett, a former state representative who was beaten in a challenge by Davis earlier this decade.
Other races of note on the local scene include State Senate (District 27), prosecuting attorney, Commissioner of the Middle District, county recorder, and Jay County Council District 4.
In school board races, Michael Shannon, who represents Dunkirk, does not have opposition.
Four contenders are seeking the Jay School Board’s District 1 seat, while head-to-head matchups are featured in districts 3 and 5.
