Emissions may contain carcinogens (06/05/06)

Letter to the Editor

To the editor:

I was very saddened by the events that took place on June 1 regarding the Broin Company (ethanol plant). The day started with a press conference informing Portland that the Broin Company will be building an ethanol plant next to the stone quarry (I guess the (Portland Planning Commission) ok’d this?).

Many residents are upset that this company will be our “new neighbor.” It is discouraging to think that we moved from smog-polluted California four years ago to a new polluted area. Portland residents (your family and friends) will be affected by this company.

The wastes that the ethanol plant will produce include: cancer causing agents, V.O.C.s, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde (carcinogen), methanol, acetic acid (carcinogen), and many other hazardous materials. People have complained of extremely strong and scents (not “baking bread”) that cause nausea, headaches, respiratory problems, and asthma trouble. Children have gotten sick from the smell alone, enough to make them stay indoors and close the windows at schools in Minnesota. Will this help our tourism?

Are we willing to allow our families to be at an increased risk of developing health problems in order to bring more money to our community? The argument is that the EPA will monitor these wastes. How can we trust that they have our best interests in mind and are not financially influenced? The EPA has a track record of approving DDT, MTBE, and many other carcinogens to be released into our environment.

The (Portland Planning Commission) allows major companies with lots of money to change zoning to fit their needs with no regard to residents. The (Portland Planning Commission) seems to have no concern for our health and well-being. Three of the people on the board voted not to approved the re-zoning, for those three people, thank you.

There are many people in Portland (which we love) who do not want gigantic smoke stacks with gross plumes of smoke in their skyline or want their families breathing cancer causing and sickness producing fumes.

As far as I am concerned, no amount of money is worth putting a hazardous polluting company in our county.
