Event timing was perfect

Editorial

The grills couldn’t have fired up at a more timely moment.
Community and Family Services held its second annual Grillmaster competition Saturday at Hudson Family Park in Portland, just days after a former employee was jailed on felony charges of fraud and theft.
Saturday’s event provided visible proof that the organization providing a broad array of services to low-income families — from the Helping Hand Food Pantry to home weatherization and utility assistance — is alive and well.
The event served as a reminder that the criminal charges reflect an isolated incident and are not an indicator of systemic or structural problems.

In fact, the manner in which CFS leadership dealt with the problem inspires confidence rather than doubt. When concerns were raised, CFS executive director Andy Glentzer investigated, discharged the individual employee and contacted law enforcement. That’s exactly what he should have done.
Audits followed, along with procedural safeguards to prevent future incidents.
And when the arrest warrant was served, Glentzer issued a statement addressing any public concerns.
So when the grills fired up on Saturday, CFS employees could put the whole unfortunate incident behind them and focus on going forward. The timing was perfect. — J.R.[[In-content Ad]]
