Event was big success
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
Many people have heard the African proverb, “it takes a village to raise a child” and on September 14, Jay County proved that it takes a community with a vision to raise a child to pursue their future college and career choices. Fulfilling a goal shared by 20/20 Vision and The Portland Foundation, John Jay Center hosted their first C3 — College-Career-Connect event. The event would not have been possible without the support of The Portland Foundation, 20/20 Vision Committee members, Jay County High School, Jay County Hospital, Jay County REMC, and the John Jay Center committee members along with the Board of Directors.
One goal of this event was to provide the senior class of Jay County High School an opportunity to connect with over 65 young professionals sharing their career expertise. The John Jay Center would like to thank all of the professionals for taking the time to share their experiences in various careers with the students. Special thanks go to Emily Roberts for contacting the young professionals and providing t-shirts to the Jay County High School teachers.
The evening was filled with opportunities to gain information from the following colleges and we greatly appreciate their time: IPFW, ITT Technical Institute, University Technical Institute, Ivy Tech, Brown Mackie, Taylor University, Manchester College, Tucker Career Technical Center, Indiana Tech, Indiana Wesleyan University, Indiana University East, Earlham College, Wabash College, Lincoln Tech, Ball State University, University of Indianapolis, Western Governor’s University and University of North Western Ohio Technical College.
The John Jay Center would like to thank our summa cum laude and magna cum laude sponsors: First Merchants Bank, PaceSetter Bank, MainSource Bank, Raymond James, Edward Jones, MBG Financial Group and Kathy Subler at State Farm Insurance for sharing financial advice for college. We would also like to thank our special sessions presenters for sharing their information, Doug Inman from The Portland Foundation, Edward Jones for coordinating the event with Pattie Avers, 529 College Plan, Indiana Wesleyan University representative Angela Spangler for sharing FAFSA information along with Rick Dwenger from 21st Century Scholasr.
We also appreciate Indiana Wesleyan University’s donation of refreshments along with committee members who volunteered to serve.
Again we would like to thank everyone who attended the event and hope you will join us again next year.

director, John Jay Center
