Facility says thanks for help with water (10/24/06)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

The staff and residents of Heritage Commons Assisted Living facility would like to thank Portland Mayor Bruce Hosier, Jim Fennig and our local Wal-Mart for the kindness they showed to us during the recent water problem.

Within the first hour of the water being off, Mayor Hosier was at Heritage Commons asking what he could do to help us function without water. He contacted Wal-Mart and they supplied us with bottled water, gallons of water, and disposable dishes to get us through meal times and the boil order.

Mayor Hosier also kept in touch with us by either stopping by Heritage Commons or calling each day the boil order was in effect. Again, thanks to Bruce Hosier and Wal-Mart for being so attentive to us.

Deb Tipton, executive director; Laura Sours, dietary supervisor; and Georgeanna Brown, activity director, Heritage Commons

Attacking

To the editor:

The attack on the middle class could be the biggest issue facing Indiana voters this year.

We have a government in Indiana that believes creating $9 an hour jobs is wonderful. It may be for the government and the owners but try living on $9.00 an hour, $18,000 a year and get ahead in this state after taxes. And you better not have kids.

When our state representatives and governor brag about a BMV center in Winchester and all the jobs it created, I say they should have been good paying jobs - not just jobs.

Why would a state brag about setting an example of $9 an hour jobs - jobs that can keep people on government subsidies?

Is this what we need in a government? I think not.

We as a state keep giving money to companies that make promises to create good paying jobs and then not live up to all of their promises: Profits high, wages low.

If you look at these jobs they create again the employee can receive government subsidies, putting more burdens on the middle class because government has given the rich so many tax cuts.

It's apparent anything that corporate America wants, Indiana and our state representative will give them.

Enough is enough. Vote for the middle class. Vote for a change.
