'Facts' need some clarification (10/28/2008)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

I feel Laurie J. Hein's reply to Glen Priest's letter (The Commercial Review Oct. 25) is in need of a bit of clarification.

The information she cites as "fact" can indeed be found online at the Web site she gave.

Unfortunately the Web site is hardly an impartial or neutral purveyor of information. It is, in fact, a national right to life Web site.

I went to the Web site and read what Ms. Hein is alleging.

Sen. Obama's objection the bill was over a "neutrality clause" in the bill. There apparently would have been a conflict between the Illinois law and constitutional law (Roe vs. Wade).

I'm not sure why Ms. Hein thinks Sen. Obama is against human dignity or human rights as her last paragraph implies. Seems to me I remember reading that Sen. McCain was pro-choice at one time.

One question for Ms. Hein, when a child dies from malnutrition or a preventable childhood disease because the child's parents are poor is that also "murder?" Look that up online.

Trust him

To the editor:

For some time now we've been receiving negative mailings from Rep. Davis's opponent. Those mailings are full of misstatements and outright lies.

Representative Bill Davis has worked tirelessly and successfully to reduce our property taxes and dedicated himself to economic development in his district like no other representative we've had in years.

Recently I watched him fight for us at the State Tax and Financing Policy Committee at the Statehouse. No other official asks more pertinent questions than Bill Davis, I'm proud to know he represents me!

In 2005 the state of Indiana was seeking a location for a Bureau of Motor Vehicle Mailing Center. Bill Davis had taken up the challenge to bring that location to his district. I know how hard he worked on that because I own the final building that was chosen over 60 other cities.

Bill came to me when he found out I owned a property that might work, he asked me to consider the bid, he laid it on the line stressing how competitive it would be and the fact that it would not be a profit center, but would create 30-40 jobs for our community. He looked for other locations in his district and he lobbied hard on the state level for acceptance.

Bill Davis is a hard working, honest man who will always choose the best for his constituents. Jay and Randolph counties need Bill Davis, now more than ever. I trust him to do the right things for all of us.

Arrogance

To the editor:

I couldn't believe the unmitigated arrogance of the Jay County School Board. After being told by the people that they didn't want to fund an extra gym at the high school they voted to fund one by diverting money from the Capital Project Fund.

Originally they voted for a bond issue to fund a $4.5 million gym.

After enough signatures were raised to start a petition drive where the side with the most signatures wins, the board voted to cancel the project. They claimed that the state would not have allowed the bond issue anyway. Logic tells us, of course, that they would never have voted for the bond issue if they thought the state would block it. The truth is that they put their finger in the wind and realized that if they held the petition drive they would be creamed so badly that they could never claim even minimal support for the project.

Their response to the "will of the people" was to scale back the project enough to fund it with money confiscated from the Capital Project Fund. If they honestly believed they had the support of the people they would fund it with a bond issue so the people would have a voice in the funding. Instead they chose to sneak behind the peoples back. If they blow $2 million on this project then, in a few years, they can tell us they need to raise taxes to fund a $2 million bond issue for needed school repairs and we won't be able to turn that down. By then we are supposed to forget that they used the money already earmarked for the repairs to build the "Bryan Alexander" memorial gym.

Three members who voted for the project have their seats are on the fall ballot. Vormohr is not running for reelection.

Wellman is running with two opponents. Please give them your full support.

Mike Masters is running unopposed. Please send a message to him and the remaining board members who voted for this travesty by not voting for him. He can't lose, but if he wins with almost no votes it will tell the board that "we the people" have not forgotten their elitist arrogance and screw the average taxpayer behavior.

Not true

To the editor:

Indiana District 33 voters have been barraged with political mailers paid for by the Indiana Democratic State Committee. The mailer about immigration contains information about Rep. Bill Davis that is not true.

I have verified that Roll Call vote No. 270 shows that 66 representatives voted "yes" on Senate Bill 346 (Immigration Bill), and Bill Davis was one of them.

Bill's opponent and the Democratic State Committee have also tried to convince voters that he is not a friend of taxpayers. Bill Davis voted for significant property tax relief for homeowners, and as a result most District 33 homeowners saw a reduction in their property tax bills.

Bill has been a strong supporter of economic development, and I believe he will continue his dedication to bring new job opportunities to District 33 and the State of Indiana. Vote yes for Bill Davis.

Accusations

To the editor:

Hello voters. You can't just go around accusing someone of wanting to kill babies without a good reason, and these new "born alive" accusations against Barack Obama go way too far.

We're talking about the father of two little girls here. I'm sure some of you are parents.

Would you be okay if someone accused you of wanting to kill infants?

The Obama campaign put some facts up on their Web site about this particular born alive vote he's being attacked on.

At the time Barack voted against a bill containing language designed to protect infants who were "born alive," such protection was already on the books as Illinois state law.

The accusations against Barack are so reckless that not even the Republican state senator who sponsored the bill will support them.

In fact, he freely admits that "none of those who voted against SB-1082 favored infanticide."

The bill was opposed by many legislators and groups like the Illinois Medical Society because of the unintended impact it would have had on other laws and legal precedents in Illinois.

Barack is on record saying that he would have supported a similar bill that came up in Congress but that didn't pose a threat to a woman's right to choose, the way the Illinois bill did.

Check the research backing up these facts and tell others not to stand for this kind of wild and reckless accusation.

Together we can make sure these negative and divisive attacks don't affect this election.
