Fairgrounds work planned (10/25/04)

Restrooms will be hooked to new sewer line

A problem with overloaded combined sewers at the Jay County Fairgrounds may take a big step towards being resolved this fall.

Tom Zimmerman, vice president of the Jay County Fair Association, told Jay County Commissioners this morning that it will cost about $9,000 to run new sanitary sewer lines from fairgrounds restrooms and connect them with a sewer line that comes into the east side of the fairgrounds.

Zimmerman said the work should be completed this year. Taking the wastewater out of combined sewers at the fairgrounds could help with surface water drainage, and could also cut down on the amount of sewage that flows into the Salamonie River during heavy rain events.

Sewage from the fairgrounds currently flows through two septic tanks and into the combined sewer system. The septic tanks will be filled with stone, Zimmerman said, and a new sanitary sewer line will run straight through the tanks.

The line coming into the east side of the fairgrounds was paid for out of the commissioners’ budget. It taps into a grant-funded line that was run to the Jay County Retirement Center several years ago.

Officials from the local and state health departments told the fair board several years ago about the need to resolve the problem with combined sewage.

The commissioners, meeting as the county drainage board, also heard Zimmerman ask Jay County surveyor Brad Daniels to check a tile that helps drain the fairgrounds. Zimmerman said that the Mast Tile, which runs through a field south of East Votaw Street from the fairgrounds, is broken down in at least four places. The tile runs south and east and outlets into the Salamonie River.

Commissioners Mike Leonhard, Gary Theurer and Milo Miller Jr. also heard a Jefferson Township property owner request help in repairing a 10-inch tile.

Rural Fort Recovery resident Tom Hemmelgarn owns the property, which is located in section 25 of Jefferson Township in the Ross and Days Watershed.

Also discussing the matter with the commissioners was rural Portland resident Don Muhlenkamp, who farms the land.

Daniels was asked by the commissioners to check the tile, which is not listed on the county’s drainage maps but should be because it is 10 inches in diameter.[[In-content Ad]]
