Family arrested for fraud (4/9/04)

Rural Pennville family charged

Indiana State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations arrested three family members Thursday for welfare fraud totaling more than $88,000.

Arrested were Glen H. Cash, 67; Norma M. Cash, 64; and their son, Christopher H. Cash, 35, all of 8140 West 400 North, Pennville, for allegedly defrauding the state.

Detective Sergeant Jay Halstead assigned to the ISP Redkey Post conducted the fraud investigation at the request of the Jay County Division of Family Services and the Jay County prosecutor’s office, according to information from Sgt. Rod Russell, ISP public information officer.

Allegedly, Christopher H. Cash received eight Medicaid and other public assistance checks issued by the Jay County Division of Family Services from April 1999 to June 2002 totaling $88,125, to cover medical expenses that were also paid by a private insurance company. Cash did not reimburse the state.

The checks, totaling between $1,500 and $15,255, were allegedly deposited into his parents’ savings and checking accounts.

Christopher Cash was released on his own recognizance immediately after he turned himself into Halstead at the Jay County Jail Thursday about 1 p.m.

themselves into Halstead about 3 p.m. Thursday at the Jay County Jail. They were immediately released on $5,000 bond each. The couple’s bond was reduced Thursday to $5,000 each from $15,000 each by Jay Circuit Court Judge Brian Hutchison.

Christopher Cash faces seven counts of welfare fraud, all class C felonies, and one count of welfare fraud, a class D felony.

His parents were each charged with seven counts of aiding, inducing or causing welfare fraud, all class C felonies, and one count of aiding, inducing or causing welfare fraud, a class D felony.

The arrest warrants for the Cashes were issued in Jay Circuit Court on April 2.

Attorney Kent Kiracofe, a special prosecutor from Wells County, was assigned to this case, according to officials from the Jay County prosecutor’s office.[[In-content Ad]]
