Family of fire victim thanks helpers (07/29/2008)
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
The daughters of Charles Turner wish to express deep gratitude to the Portland Fire Department, the emergency medical technicians, the Samaritan paramedics, the Portland Police Department and neighbors who reacted quickly to the recent house fire.
Your compassionate efforts undoubtedly saved our father's life.
God bless you.
Janet Cole, Nancy Dillard, Jean Marvel, Karen Hunt, Davilee Stevens and Sharyl Calhoun, daughters of Charles Turner, Portland
Great work
To the editor:
As you all know, South Wayne Street has been under construction for some time.
What you don't know, is how kind and considerate John Diemer and his crew from Brooks Construction have been to our employees and clients. They have kept us informed as to when water will be shut off, what direction to use to get to our building, and updates on the project.
As this phase of the project draws to a close and the next phase begins, we want to thank John and his crew for the courtesy they have shown us.
Even though we all have been inconvenienced for some time, we will have a very nice street when all is done.
Thank you,
Sue Schrock, for Community and Family Services Inc.
Walk thanks
To the editor:
The Walk Against Cancer was a huge success. We felt blessed that the downpours stopped as we started setting up for the event. Our blessings continued as we raised more than $20,560 for the Jay County Cancer Society. This was our best fundraising year ever.
We would like to thank our walk committee, Jay County Cancer Society board members, and our walkers for joining us this year.
The opening ceremonies highlighted the evening with a balloon launch and a moment of reflection about hope - hope for healing, hope for comfort and hope for a cure.
We also have great appreciation for our sponsors who year after year donate money so that we can hold the walk and donate all the money raised to the cancer society. This year our Gold sponsors are Stoneridge Electronics, Hartzell Fan, Delta Theta Tau Sorority, Jay County Hospital, Jay County Knights of Columbus, Mayor Hosier's Golf Outing, Family Worship Center and MainSource Bank. Silver sponsors include the Portland Eye Center, Moser Engineering, Immaculate Conception Altar Rosary Society, and Alpha Delta Gamma Nu.
Jay County is certainly a generous community, not only with its money, but its time as well. When all is said and done, the walk had more than 50 volunteers who put in more than 1,000 hours to make the walk so successful. This is a tremendous effort on behalf of the cancer patients and their families in Jay County.
Next year, the Walk Against Cancer will be Saturday, June 20. Mark that date on your calendar now and plan on bringing your church, your business, your family and your friends to the walk.
There are many ways to be involved, including collecting pledges, being a sponsor, or volunteering just a few hours.
Donations are always welcome at: Walk Against Cancer, P.O. Box 614, Portland, IN, 47371, or at The Portland Foundation in the Jay County Cancer Society endowment fund. The fund will ensure that the cancer society can continue to provide financial assistance to cancer patients in Jay County long into the future. Remember the cancer society in your estate planning.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact the cancer society on its message line at (260) 726-8110. Thanks again for a great year.
See you next year.
