Farmer still unhappy with field debris (04/25/06)

Letter to the Editor

I think Jay County voters should ask some questions before voting in future elections.

Jay County has a higher county income tax rate than Adams and a $40 wheel tax that Adams does not have. Do we receive equal value for our tax dollar?

When using taxpayer’s money to lay dust control on gravel roads, I think it would be fair to treat a strip in front of everyone’s home before treating entire miles where only one or two people live. By the way, is anyone else among the unlucky ones who must lay their own dust control? The last time I checked, you could buy the same product they use at Zurcher Tire and apply it yourself for about one-eighth the cost of letting the county do it.

Jay County has more equipment to do its own ditch work than any other county in the state. Do we have that much more ditch work than all other counties in the state? Or, do we undertake questionable projects to justify maintaining this equipment? Like shoving the sandbars up the banks on Bear Creek so the first high water can put them back in place less than three weeks later?

After my letter complaining about the county crew spreading trash on our farm last spring, the surveyor and commissioners looked at the ground. When you consider that I had spent some time picking up stuff that was visible on top of the ground, just what was the purpose of this inspection. Since most of the trash had dirt on top of it, could we say “cover up?”

Does anyone think I plugged my field cultivator with stuff you could see on top of the ground? Did they have metal detectors, glass detectors and shovels with them? Do they have a paper on file at the courthouse declaring this land clean? Would that prove all future damage would be from things that weren’t there when they inspected it? I might still be able to find some of the debris I cleaned out of our field cultivator and I have a few witnesses who saw it before it was cleaned.

I believe to have this happen from negligence is one thing; to try to pretend it never happened at all is another. If these men can look at a strip of land and tell what it does or does not contain, they should move on to much bigger things (like finding Bin Laden).

People of Jay County must decide whether they want their local government to serve them or rule them. I think a house cleaning is in order. You can start on May 2 by calling for a Republican ballot and voting for Jack Houck to remove Mr. Miller; then bide your time until the other three involved in this deal come up to bat and do the same for them. But you must get out and vote. Too busy? Gas too high? Going to be gone May 2? Vote absentee and pay your taxes in one stop. Need a ride? Give me a call. Independent? I think on May 2 you can be a Republican.

This episode has shown me one of my biggest mistakes. Since I began voting in 1964, I can recall voting for two Democrats. If God allows me to see a few more elections, I vow to even this up a little — providing the Jay County Democrats can fill their ticket.

This land in question has lay fallow for two years. If my fear of farming this was baseless, wouldn’t the landowner say, “Get out there and get it done,” lest he find a new renter? Some guys would do so anyway because the landowner bears no risk of damage. He has received no income or tax relief from this land for two years.

This event was not created by me and has left me very disappointed by my local government. Maybe I’m too old to get mad. If upon seeing this these boys suddenly find me in violation of a dozen or so zoning ordinances, we’ll find out.

If you think we have fine people in Iraq in harm’s way, fighting to defend the Jay County officials’ right to treat people this way, then I’m sorry I bothered you.

If you think I’m just an old grouch, I will admit sometimes I wake up grumpy.

Sometimes I let her sleep.
