Fast start carries the Indians (12/20/03)
FRHS boys basketball
Fort Recovery got off to a fast start for a change.
After having fallen into double-digit deficits in three of their first four gams, the Indian boys basketball team turned the tables on the New Knoxville Rangers Friday night. The Tribe led by 10 after the first quarter on the way to a 57-45 win over the home Rangers.
Fort Recovery (3-2, 1-0 Midwest Athletic Conference) out scored the Rangers 14-4 in the first quarter, and upped the lead to 34-15 at halftime. The advantage slipped a bit in the third period, but New Knoxville (1-2, 0-1 MAC) never made a serious run in the defeat.
The Indians built their lead with a 46-percent effort from the field in the first half compared to just 18 percent (5-of-28) for the Rangers.
New Knoxville never had an answer for Dusty Tobe, who paced Fort Recovery with 24 points. He shot 8-of-15 from the field and was a perfect 6-for-6 at the foul line. He also grabbed five rebounds and added four assists.
John Bihn made his biggest contribution on the glass, pulling down a team-high 15 rebounds. The Indians outworked New Knoxville on the glass to the tune of a 40-25 rebounding advantage.
Travis VanSkyock followed Tobe for the Tribe with 10 points, and Sean Kahlig had eight points and eight rebounds. Greg Faller dished out six assists.
The Rangers got balanced scoring, but not enough of it.
Jordy Cornett, Dustin Kruse and Tyler Henschen each scored nine points, and Kale Wierwille and Travis McCullough added eight points apiece. However, New Knoxville finished with a 28-percent mark from the field.
Fort Recovery will try to run its winning streak to three games when it hosts Crestview Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
