Fatal third leads to Indians' 2nd defeat (01/06/07)
FRHS boys basketball
MINSTER, Ohio - After a slow start, a second-quarter rally brought them even.
But a third quarter surge by host Minster put the Fort Recovery Indians so far behind they couldn't recover.
The Indians, who had surprised many - if not themselves - by jumping out to a 6-1 overall record that included wins in their first two conference games, fell to a 71-58 defeat Friday.
The host Wildcats, who improve to 6-3 overall and 3-0 in Midwest Athletic Conference action, took control by outscoring the Indians 21-10 in the third quarter and held on in a high-scoring fourth.
A balanced attack was enough for Minster to overcome big-scoring nights from Fort Recovery's Aaron Kahlig (19 points) and Clint Tobe (15).
The Wildcats had all five starters in double figures - paced by Jimmy Stechschulte and Evan Lee with 15 points each. Logan Sommer added 13 for Minster, while both Zac Boeke and Andrew Baumer scored 12 points.
The Indians literally shot themselves out of contention in the second half, hitting just 30 percent of all their shots (and 18 percent from 3-point range) after connecting on 12-of-24 attempts (50 percent) in the opening two periods.
Minster, which built a 49-38 lead through three quarters after being tied at 28 at the half, improved its accuracy from the floor in the closing two quarters, as it hit 50 percent (12-for-24).
The Wildcats also held an advantage at the free-throw line, connecting on 20-of-31 attempts - with many of those attempts coming in the fourth quarter as the Indians played aggressively in an attempt to climb their way back into contention.
Fort Recovery, which plays tonight at Houston, out-rebounded the Wildcats 29-24, with Toby Metzger pulling down a game-high nine and Kahlig six.
Minster also prevailed in Friday's junior varsity game, outscoring Fort Recovery 20-8 in the third period on its way to a 51-48 victory.
Tyler Jutte and Wes Kahlig led the Indians with 18 and 16 points, respectively.[[In-content Ad]]
