February a perfect time to dream (02/04/2009)

Back in the Saddle

By By JACK RONALD-

It's times like this I begin to wonder if I'm part bear.

The urge to hibernate is almost overwhelming.

It's not that I'm really tired, but there's a desire to close the curtains, disconnect the phone, pull up the covers, and clock out of consciousness.

Wake me when it's spring.

February may have its charms, but I have never found them.

As a kid, I always found Groundhog Day to be a cruel hoax. No matter what that darned rodent did, winter continued to drag on.

Washington's birthday and Lincoln's birthday may have held marginal interest in third grade, but that was quickly outgrown. Now, Presidents' Day is just an interruption in mail delivery or an excuse for a linen sale.

Valentine's Day is the only real event of interest on the calendar, and that one has some sting for people who aren't married or in a relationship.

So the only real thing to do, particularly on those long Sunday afternoons now that the NFL is a shrinking object in our rearview mirror, is daydream.

Close your eyes and that's not snow outside, it's crocuses pushing their way up through the mud.

That's not the wind you hear, it's the crack of a bat at spring training on grass so green you can taste it.

That's not the rumble of a snowplow going past, it's a kid on a new motorcycle, his girlfriend's hair blowing in the breeze.

February's a time for planning vacations you can't afford and will never take. The amusement is in the planning.

A cruise to a tropic isle, a flat in Amsterdam, a raft trip down a raging river, hours drifting by in idle conversation in a sidewalk café in some city where you don't speak the language. It doesn't matter which one strikes your fancy.

The pleasure's in the dreaming.

February's a time for planning gardens you'll never have the time and energy to plant or revisions to the garden you planted last year. Maybe eggplants this year and try to keep the zucchini under control and don't overdo it on the tomatoes. Remember all those from last August. Maybe you need to rent a tiller and double the size of the whole thing. Why not? At this point, there's no sweat involved, just dreaming.

February's a time for figuring out what books you want to read next, mixing your pitches and trying not to take on something depressing until the sun is with us more hours every day. Read lightly this month.

And don't be concerned if you doze off with your book on one of those long Sunday afternoons.

That's a form of hibernation too.

And it's one more opportunity to dream.[[In-content Ad]]
