Field dwindles for road chief (1/13/04)

Several candidates withdraw

A dwindling field of candidates may make selecting a new superintendent for the Jay County Highway Department easier than planned.

Of the four candidates that Jay County Commissioners planned to interview in an executive session Monday morning, only two actually showed up. And the commissioners said that one of those two candidates might be reluctant to take the position, which carries a starting salary of $29,787.91.

One candidate took himself out of the running when contacted about an interview, while another canceled over the weekend.

Commissioners Gary Theurer, Mike Leonhard and Milo Miller Jr. didn’t take any official action or even discuss the issue in open session Monday — except to outline the process. The names of candidates or finalists were not released.

An announcement may be made Monday regarding the position.

The highway superintendent’s position opened up in early December, when Robert Sours announced he was resigning effective Dec. 31 to become the chief of police in Portland.

Sours had been highway superintendent since late 1997. At that time, the commissioners went to the Jay County Council and asked for an exception to the county’s pay plan so that Sours could start at higher than the minimum pay.

On several occasions recently, the council has declined to make exceptions to the pay plan.

In other business late Monday morning, Jay Emergency Medical Service director Teresa Foster-Geesaman reported the amount and cost of fuel used by the county’s ambulances has approximately doubled since the service became paramedic-certified in 2003.

The increase, county officials say, is because JEMS is being utilized more often for critical-care transports from Jay County Hospital to other locations.

Also Monday, the commissioners re-appointed Ken Walters as the county’s appointment to the Portland Planning Commission. Walters lives within the two-mile buffer area outside Portland city limits that the city controls for zoning purposes.[[In-content Ad]]
