Filing deadline passes quietly (02/23/08)
The filing period for a busy upcoming election cycle ended the same way it began - rather quietly.
There were no last-minute filers for a host of county offices that will be on the ballot for the primary May 6.
The deadline to file to run as a major party candidate in the primary was Friday at noon.
While Republicans have slated at least one candidate for eight offices that will be on the county-level ballot in 2008, Democrats have candidates for just three of those eight positions.
Also on the ballot in May are races at the state and federal level, including state representative, governor, U.S. Representative and President of the United States.
Although there are no contested races at the county level among Democrats, local Democratic voters may still go to the polls and vote for presidential candidates.
There are three contested races on the Republican side locally, including a five-way battle for three spots on the fall ballot for an at-large seat on the Jay County Council.
The top three contenders in the primary will be on the general election ballot.
GOP council candidates include incumbents Judy LeMaster, Portland, and Marilyn Coleman, Redkey, along with newcomers Dennis Mason Jr., Jerry Monroe and Jason White. Mason and White are Portland residents, while Monroe lives in Jefferson Township.
The only candidate for council on the Democratic side is Madison Township resident Gary Theurer. Theurer is giving up his seat as Jay County Commissioner of the South District to make a bid for council.
In that South District Commissioner race, two current councilmen have filed to run. Jim Zimmerman, rural Redkey, is a Republican, while Gerald Kirby, Redkey, is a Democrat.
The Republicans will also have contested races in the primary for county treasurer and county coroner.
Incumbent treasurer Robin Alberson is being challenged by Portland resident Jim Randall, while Warren Boice, Bryant, will run against current deputy coroner Paulette Bonvillian Wagner in the GOP primary for coroner.
Incumbent coroner Mark Barnett, Portland, has filed to run for re-election.
Others filing to run for office on the Republican side include Max C. Ludy Jr., Portland, Jay Superior Court Judge; Ellen Coats, Portland, Jay Circuit Court Clerk; Bradley Daniels, Portland (incumbent), Jay County Surveyor; and Faron D. Parr, Bryant, Commissioner, North District.
The deadline to register to vote in the primary election is Monday, April 7.
