Fincannon to supply cruisers (11/4/03)

Vehicles to be purchased for sheriff's department

A dealership from Hartford City made the best deal on two new cruisers for the Jay County Sheriff’s Department.

Fincannon Ford Mercury Inc. submitted the lowest of four quotes for the purchase of two 2004 police cruisers, Jay County Commissioners were told Monday afternoon.

The Fincannon quote for two Crown Victorias was a net price of $35,980.50 — including a $5,000 trade-in allowance for two vehicles currently used by the department. The commissioners gave Jay County Sheriff Todd Penrod permission to order the vehicles, which will be purchased from funds in the 2004 budget.

Fincannon’s price for the vehicles ($40,980.50) was the lowest even without trade, beating Ken Kunkle Chevrolet’s bid for two Impalas ($41,382.50) and Crown Victoria bids submitted by Les Wenning Ford of Fort Recovery ($42,550) and Moser Motors of Berne ($48,896.72).

Kunkle chose not to include a trade-in allowance in its quote, while the net prices for Les Wenning and Moser were $39,250 and $44,496.72, respectively.

Penrod said that a quote from Bloomington Ford using state-bid prices came in one day after the deadline set in quote requests, but that those quotes were also higher than those submitted by Fincannon.

In another sheriff’s department matter, Commissioner Gary Theurer asked Penrod about a claim submitted recently for $4,500 to pay a dog training facility in northern Indiana.

Penrod told Theurer and fellow Commissioners Milo Miller Jr. and Mike Leonhard that new K-9 handler, Patrick Wells, is in the fourth week of a five-week training session along with the department’s 5-year-old dog, “Billy.”

Deputy Travis Weaver, who was the original handler for the dog that was purchased with grant funds, was recently promoted to chief investigator and Wells was hired as his replacement.

The training will teach Wells the proper techniques and commands, said Penrod, along with developing trust between Wells and his canine partner.

The bill for the training is being paid from a community corrections fund that is paid by the Indiana Department of Correction.[[In-content Ad]]
