FORT RECOVERY - The pep band wailed away at the fight song.

Mary Niekamp, wife of superintendent Pat Niekamp, danced with a group of young fans.

And principal Jeff Hobbs promised to match senior Perry Hull's colorful Mohawk if the Fort Recovery Indians win the state title.

Their chance at the state final four comes tonight.

Tribe fans gathered at the Fort Site Fieldhouse Thursday evening for a pep session in preparation for tonight's regional championship game against the Jefferson Township Broncos at Fairmont's Trent Arena in Kettering.

Hobbs, coach Brian Patch and seniors Greg Kahlig and Cody Fiely all addressed the crowd. And the evening ended with fans filing out to the song "Tonight's Gonna Be a Good Night" by the Black-Eyed Peas.

The Indians hope tonight will be good for them when they take on the Jefferson team that is ranked seventh in Division IV. Adreian Payne, a 6-foot-10-inch center who will play at Michigan State next year, leads the Broncos.

No. 8 Fort Recovery counters with Kahlig, the school's all-time leading scorer and the No. 2 scorer in Midwest Athletic Conference history with 1,700 points. He is just 44 behind 2004 Versailles graduate Kyle Gehle.

He's supported by a trio of other seniors, who with him have dreamed of this opportunity since watching the 1999 FRHS team run all the way to the state championship game.

The Tribe won 16 of its first 17 games this season, avenging its only loss - to the host Cavaliers in the Coldwater Classic - in MAC play. It stumbled a bit late, dropping two of its final three games as St. John's and New Bremen pulled even for a three-way tie for the league title.

And the Indians' tournament nearly ended after just one game as they trailed by 14 to New Knoxville in the sectional championship. But they roared back to win in overtime, defeated New Bremen in the district title game and now stand just four quarters away from the school's fourth trip to the state finals.

Hobbs announced at the pep rally that the school had already sold out its regional ticket allotment of 1,500 by Thursday afternoon. They were provided 500 more, guaranteeing Trent Arena will be filled with the Fort Recovery faithful.

And, as always, they'll be chanting, "We wear purple", just like they hope to be again next week at the Schottenstein Center.[[In-content Ad]]
