Firehouse grant effort continuing (06/20/06)

Jay County Commissioners

By By MARY ANN LEWIS-

As the effort to capture grant funds to construct a new fire station/Jay Emergency Medical Service building in Dunkirk continues, Jay County Community Developer Ami Davidson gave a progress report Monday to Jay County Commissioners.

The county is serving as the grant applicant since Dunkirk has an open grant with the state for the Quincy Place addition and is not eligible to apply for grants until that is closed.

She asked Milo Miller Jr., Gary Theurer, and Faron Parr to name four members to a committee to recommend a site for the new facility. Dunkirk will also be naming four representatives to the board as well.

The county will first be seeking a $50,000 planning grant, and if that is awarded, will then ask the Indiana Office of Community & Rural Affairs for a $500,000 construction grant.

She told commissioners she would continue to update them on the progress.

Commissioners again heard county engineer, Dan Watson, say bid letting for moving an old iron bridge to Hudson Family Park in Portland is set to begin sometime this month.

Bridge number 129, on West Division Road in Knox Township, was closed to traffic earlier this year and will be removed, refurbished, and reconstructed as a pedestrian/bike bridge across the Salamonie River, connecting the new park with the Weiler-Wilson Park.

The project is expected to be completed by the fall.

Commissioners also learned Monday that Stephanie May, a member of the Jay County Hospital board of trustees, will soon be resigning from the board. She has taken a position as head of the pharmacy department at the hospital. May is currently employed by Cardinal Health, which manages the hospital’s day-to-day operations. Commissioners will now search for a replacement for May.

Also Monday, at the request of clerk Jane Ann Runyon, commissioners signed a release of global information system (GIS) information for Quest, the statewide voter registration system. She told commissioners she would provide periodic updates on the system.[[In-content Ad]]
