Flash flood totals deputy's car
Jay County Commissioners
The county will need to replace a sheriff’s cruiser after it was totaled in a flash flood Saturday night.
Sheriff Ray Newton told the Jay County Commissioners that a deputy’s vehicle was caught in a flash flood in Bearcreek Township around 11 p.m.
“He was heading west on 500 north near Liberty Road when he hit some high water, but he was able to get through it,” Newton said. “He didn’t think it was that deep, and it wasn’t. But there was another section within 50 to 100 yards in another area. He got pulled in, I’d say probably three feet deep.”
Newton said the deputy was not in the ditch and the water was running over the road after the county was pounded with heavy rain on Saturday.
“He was just at the wrong place at the wrong time,” Newton said, adding later that, “I’ve never seen that road flood before.”
The 2010 Chevrolet Impala cruiser was totaled in the incident, but is covered by insurance. Newton told the commissioners he is getting pricing from Bloomington Ford for a replacement vehicle.
In other business Monday, the commissioners:
•Were asked by Jay Circuit Court Judge Brian Hutchison how he should handle a $20 Target gift card that was received after purchasing some supplies. The commissioners advised Hutchison that the card should be used to purchase additional supplies for the office.[[In-content Ad]]
