FORT RECOVERY — One demon just refuses to go away.

The Marion Local Flyers continued to haunt Fort Recovery’s girls basketball team Thursday, handing them a 47-42 defeat and knocking them out of first place in the Midwest Athletic Conference.

The Indians (11-3, 3-2 MAC) nearly came all the way back from a 10-point, first-half deficit, pulling to within 37-36 on a 3-pointer by Holly Stein on the first possession of the fourth quarter. But they went scoreless for the next 6:57 as Marion Local (11-3, 5-1 MAC) pushed its advantage back to nine points as it grabbed the win.

Fort Recovery failed to score on eight consecutive possessions, going 0-for-5 from the field with five turnovers after Stein’s triple.

Senior point guard Maria Moeller scored 14 points to lead the Flyers, who have beaten the Indians four times in three years. The teams could meet again in sectional play this season.

Moeller, who also had seven assists, made just half of her 16 free throws as Marion Local struggled from the foul line. It shot just 13-of-32 from the stripe for 41 percent.

Jenna Barhorst added 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Holly Fortkamp and Andrea Pohlman each had six rebounds.

Tiff Gaerke and Holly Stein had 12 and 11 points respectively for the Indians, who struggled to a 26-percent shooting night from the field.

Gaerke had her fourth straight double-double and sixth consecutive double digit rebounding effort as she grabbed a game-high 14 boards. She also blocked four shots.

Stein had seven rebounds and three assists. She was 6-of-8 from the foul line.
