MARIA STEIN, Ohio - Fumbles on consecutive fourth-quarter drives exaggerated the outcome Friday night.
Fort Recovery High School's football team gave up three scores in a span of less than four minutes of the fourth quarter as it fell 55-7 to the host Division V No. 4 Marion Local Flyers.
Marion Local (7-1, 5-1 Midwest Athletic Conference) scored the game's first four TDs to take firm control. The Indians (3-5, 1-5 MAC) picked up their lone score in the final minute of the opening half, and then turnovers allowed the score to balloon out of control in the fourth quarter.
Alex Post scored a 2-yard TD to put the Flyers up 42-7 with 8:35 left in the game. Fort Recovery gave the ball away on a fumble on the second play of the ensuing drive, and four plays later Niles Keller scored for Marion Local on a 25-yard run.
On the second play of the next possession the Tribe fumbled again, and the Flyers needed just two plays to put the ball in the end zone on an Alex Post TD. The three scores were separated by just 3:25 on the game clock.
Marion Local dominated time of possession, keeping the ball for nearly 30 minutes, and racked up nearly twice as many yards as the Indians.
It picked up 313 of its 419 total yards on the ground, with Ben Smith running 13 times for 84 yards and Alex Post carrying 11 times for 81 yards.
Troy Prenger completed half of his 16 passing attempts for 115 yards.
Greg Kahlig tossed for 192 yards for the Indians, but was limited to just 41 percent (15-of-37) passing. He tossed to Frank Thien five times for 76 yards and Craig Tobe four times for 61 yards, and also had the lone FRHS touchdown on a 1-yard run.
Thien also led the Tribe's rushing effort with 30 yards on just four carries.
