Format will help Indians' chances
Rays of Insight
With high school football underway in Indiana, college football starting this weekend and the NFL season opener less than 10 days away, football is on the brain.
A pair of questions this month focused on the gridiron. But let’s start with a question about baseball.

How many teams have represented Indiana in the Little League World Series?
—Nathan Miller,
Wannamaker
Teams from Indiana have played in the Little League World Series 13 times since 1957. The most recent of those was New Castle, which won the Great Lakes Regional in 2012.
The state’s best run came in the early 1970s when Highland (1970), Gary (1971) and Hammond (1972) won three in a row with Gary and Hammond both finishing as World Series runners-up. Other LLWS representatives from Indiana were Terre Haute (1961 and ’68), Jeffersonville (1965 and 2008), Southport (1984), Chesterfield (1987), Dyer (1997) and Brownsburg (1999 and 2001).

Will the Indiana University football team play in a bowl game this season?
—Shannon Michael, Bryant
The Hoosiers need to go 3-1 in non-conference games in order to have a chance to be bowl eligible because they’re unlikely to win more than three in the Big Ten. In those games, IU plays at home against Indiana State, Navy, Bowling Green and Missouri.
I’d say Indiana is more likely to split those games, and not reach bowl eligibility.

What are your thoughts on the Fort Recovery football team being in the new, and smallest, seventh division?
—Perry Hull,
Maineville, Ohio
Playing in Division VII can only be a good thing for Fort Recovery.
The Indians, with a male enrollment of 108, will be tied as the 11th-largest school out of 105 in Division VII. There will be fewer teams competing for the eight playoff berths — 25 in Region 26 compared to 31 in Division VI Region 24 last season. They will also only have to deal with one of its Midwest Athletic Conference rivals — Marion Local.
The Indians have never made the playoffs. There’s no guarantee they will this year either, but the seven-division format gives them a better opportunity.[[In-content Ad]]
