Former scout gives praise (05/24/07)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

I would like to tell you about a person in the community that does so much for the youth, and no one really knows what he does.

This person has helped shape my life and played a big role in who I am today.

This person takes children under his wing and helps them to grow and learn on their own with little or no reimbursement for himself.

He gives up every Monday night and a lot of weekends for these kids in the hope that they will become better citizens for tomorrow.

He has been doing this longer than I have been alive and will probably do this for a long time to come.

He gives children the chance to excel and become more than they would have been. This gives them the chance to move on after school and make a better life for themselves.

This person was my scoutmaster and his name is Roger Johns. He changed my life, and I know he will change others.

CNF thanks

To the editor:

In 2005 and 2006, $24,610 was contributed by the 4Community project, which developed the community needs fund and set the structure for Jay County to participate in the 211 project.

The members of the CNF committee would like to extend a big thank you to everyone that contributed to these funds.

The CNF fund was developed to help residents of Jay County in need of assistance with utilities or rent that might not qualify for other programs.

All money donated to this fund is distributed by United Way to the People Helping People fund through Community and Family Services Inc.

To this date we have helped families in Dunkirk (12), Portland (35), Pennville (6) and Redkey (3).

If you would like to contribute to the Community Needs Fund for 2008 distribution, you may do so by contacting your local United Way office at (260) 726-7010 or through your local church.

Many thanks from the Community Needs Fund committee.

Jeanne Houchins,

CNF committee

Fun is free

To the editor:

Why are children required when they join an activity to have special shoes, special pants, etc.? When I was playing ball and all the other sports offered by the community, sponsors paid for a t-shirt and a ball cap, and at the end of the season we got trophies for first and second place. There was a minimal charge to participate. But it was nothing outrageous. And we did not have to be a special member of anything. We just wanted to play. We had fun and it did not cost a lot of money.

I remember playing baseball wearing the t-shirt and ball cap with the sponsor's name on it, and using my own jeans and sneakers, and having a great time.

Anymore it is about lining someone's pocket and childen's parents having to pay the price. If they cannot, the children pay the price by not being able to participate.

Then they are bored and you people that are responsible sit back and gripe because the kids are getting into trouble.

Let's not lose our focus on our future. We need to teach the children that you can have fun without a lot of money.
