FRHS cross country
COLDWATER, Ohio - In their first tournament action, the Indian runners performed well.
Mindy Vogel broke the 20-minute mark and finished in fourth place to lead the Fort Recovery High School girls cross country team to a fourth-place finish at Thursday's Midwest Athletic Conference Championships. The Indians scored 98 points to finish behind Minster (28), Versailles (66) and Coldwater (77) in the eight-team field.
The FRHS boys team, which is made up entirely of freshmen, placed eighth out of nine teams with 252 points. It was ahead of Parkway (269) while Minster won with 39 points and St. Henry was second at 67.
Vogel was one of just five runners to finish in less than 20 minutes, and she narrowly missed a top-three finish as she battled Mary Prakel of Versailles to the finish line. The Fort Recovery senior crossed the line in 19-minutes, 53.60 seconds, just six tenths behind Prakel.
Minster's Jessica Albers took the MAC title at 19:32.80, and Erin Calvelage of St. John's was second in 19:47.80.
Tina Roessner, a junior, fell just short of giving the Indians two top-10 efforts. She placed 11th in 20:17.50, just two seconds behind Cecilia Slonkosky of Minster.
Freshmen Alexis Sutter and Abby Huelskamp went back-to-back for Fort Recovery in the No. 3 and 4 slots, with Sutter 30th in 21:39 and Huelskamp 31st with a time of 21:42. Sophomore Amber Heitkamp capped the team score in 43rd at 22:19.
Ryan Heitkamp paced the FRHS boys as he finished 38th with a time of 18:46, and Alan Vogel was 50th at 19:15. Coldwater's Dusty Kuess won the MAC boys titles in 16:54.
Caleb Heitkamp finished 65th in 19:43, Zach Guggenbiller was 104th at 21:42 and Aaron Will was 105th in 21:44.
Also running for the Indian girls were Casey Backs (47th - 22:25), Abby Sudhoff (61st - 22:57), Sam Bihn (64th - 23:11), Alison Tobe (69th - 23:24), Kelly Wendel (85th - 24:26), Hilary Pottkotter (97th - 24:47), Claire Wendel (100th - 24:51) and Tami Link (120th - 28:10).
Middle school
Two Fort Recovery boys finished in the top 10 as the Indians finished third out of four teams with 55 points. The Tribe girls were fourth out of five with 114.
Coldwater won the boys competition with 39 points. Minster and Versailles each finished with 31 points in the girls competition, with Minster taking the title by way of the sixth-runner tiebreaker.
Nathan Fullenkamp turned in the top finish for the Indians, placing fifth in the MAC with a time of 11:52.50. Mathias Koester joined him in the top 10 in 10th place at 12:32.
Following them were Derek Rammel (14th - 13:04), Shawn Roessner (19th - 13:28) and Calvin Kaiser (25th - 13:43).
The first three Fort Recovery girls finished in a pack with Christen Wendel leading the way in 18th at 13:35. Nicole Heitkamp was less than a second behind her in 20th at 13:36, and Samantha Tobe placed 23rd in a time of 13:46.
Mariah Koester finished in 39th at 14:38, and Brenda Link finished 66th in 16:32.
