Fort beats Cavs (02/04/2009)

FRHS girls basketball

COLDWATER - The Indians stepped off the bus ready to play.

Fort Recovery High School's girls basketball team made its decisive run early, scoring the game's first six points and rolling out to a 10-point lead in the first eight minutes. Its lead slipped to four points briefly in the second quarter, but was never less than seven after halftime in a 53-44 victory over the Coldwater Cavaliers.

Senior Kelsey Wuebker hit the first two hoops for the Tribe (12-3, 5-1 Midwest Athletic Conference), both off of offensive rebounds, and Joanna Snyder added a hoop for the 6-0 lead. Kendra Brunswick scored the final five points of the quarter, including a 3-pointer off an assist from Rachel Tobe, for the 19-9 advantage.

Snyder powered a balanced Indians' effort with 12 points. She also had teams highs of six assists and three steals to go along with six rebounds.

Chelsea Leuthold scored with 8 points, and Brunswick finished with seven. Nicole Pottkotter had six points, seven rebounds and five assists, and Wuebker and Anne Koesters also added six points apiece.

Kara Uhlenhake had 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Cavaliers (3-12, 1-5 MAC), who missed eight free throws while FRHS finished 10-of-11 at the stripe. Rachel Geier added seven points and five boards.

In the junior varsity game, Kelly Nietfeld led Fort Recovery with 15 points and six rebounds on the way to a 42-26 victory.
