Fort boys win Coldwater tourney (12/31/07)

FRHS boys basketball

COLDWATER, Ohio - If the Cavaliers are going to win their tournament before 2010, they're going to have to find a way to stop Greg Kahlig.

The Fort Recovery sophomore won Most Valuable Player honors, leading the Indians in scoring in both games at the Mercer Health Holiday Basketball Classic hosted by Coldwater. After pacing the Indians in a 54-39 victory over Fort Loramie Friday night, he was nearly perfect from the foul line in scoring 23 points in their 51-48 championship victory Saturday over the Cavaliers.

Coldwater (2-3) took its only lead of the second half on a 3-pointer from Kurt Riethman just before the third-quarter buzzer. But the advantage didn't last long as Kahlig turned in a three-point play on the opening possession of the final period.

The Tribe (8-1), whose only loss came in triple overtime to Wapakoneta, pushed ahead by as many as seven and held on for the win despite missing three free throws in the final 42 seconds.

Kahlig shot 10-of-11 (91 percent) from the foul line for the game, hitting seven of those free throws in the fourth quarter. He was 6-of-12 from the field, and had seven rebounds and two assists to go along with his game-high scoring total.

Senior Clint Tobe joined him on the all-tournament team in the classic's inaugural year as he finished with 13 points and four assists. Bobby Rammel had seven points and six rebounds for Fort Recovery, and Tyler Jutte also scored seven points.

Others on the all-tournament team were Coldwater's Eric Lefeld and Ryan Geier, and Kyle Turner of Fort Loramie.

Lefeld went 6-of-10 from the field as he totaled 12 points and seven rebounds. However, the rest of his team shot just 7-of-39 (18 percent) as the Cavaliers hit for just 23 percent in the first half and 35 percent for the game.

Geier followed with 10 points and five rebounds, and Keith Wenning had four assists.

Fort Recovery defeated the Cavaliers in the junior varsity championship game of the Classic as well, 45-43. Kyle Post poweredt the victory with 15 points.[[In-content Ad]]
