Fort clobbers Cardinals early (02/10/06)

FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery girls basketball team gave its fans every reason to follow it on the road the rest of the way. In their final home game Thursday, the Indians roared out to a 19-3 lead and never let the New Bremen Cardinals get close in a 62-49 victory.
Fort Recovery (14-5, 4-4 Midwest Athletic Conference) came out on fire, going on runs of 6-0, 7-0 and 6-0 for their big lead. Vicki Roessner scored nine of her 13 points in the first 2:46 of the game, and Holly Stein added six points in the 19-3 start. Abby Niekamp also had six points in the opening quarter.
After falling behind big, New Bremen (5-14, 2-6 MAC) never closed within single digits.
Stein paced the Indians, who shot 56 percent in the first half, as she finished with 25 points. She also had five assists and four rebounds.
Roessner grabbed four boards to go along with her 13 points, and Niekamp finished with 10 points. Tiff Gaerke totaled eight rebounds, four assists and two blocks.
Sara Schmiesing topped the Cardinals with 18 points and four rebounds. Liz Schnelle had 16 points and three assists, and Stephanie Winner added four boards.
Junior varsity
New Bremen managed just five field goals and shot 12 percent as the Indians rolled to a 33-15 win.
Fort Recovery limited the Cardinals to four points or fewer in every quarter. It outscored the visitors 12-3 in the second period for an 11-point halftime lead and cruised in the second half.
Anne Koesters had 12 points and two blocks for the Tribe, and Jill Pottkotter finished with six points and 12 rebounds. Lauren Wenning had seven points, and Kelsey Wuebker dished out four assists.
