LIMA, Ohio — The Fort Recovery girls basketball team is rolling. And the Lima Central Catholic Thunderbirds couldn’t do anything to stop them.
The Indians racked up a 14-0 run in the second quarter and were up by double digits for the final 23 minutes of the game in a 59-25 romp over LCC Monday.
“This team has been in most every game they’ve played,” said Fort Recovery coach Jeff Roessner, whose team won its fifth straight game. “We took it to them in every way we could take it too them.
“I thought we showed patience. We shot the ball well. We had great weak-side help defense.”
And that was especially the case in the second quarter.
Leading 17-8 after a first quarter in which they scored the first eight points, the Indians were even better in the second eight minutes. They got six points from senior Megan Wenning and four from sophomore Holly Stein in their big run, and the defense caused turnover after turnover and forced the Thunderbirds into bad shots.
LCC (7-11) didn’t score a point in the period until Katie Fisher, who finished with a team-high 10 points, drove for a lay-up with 12 seconds left in the half.
Fort Recovery’s 14 straight points pushed them to a 21-point lead at the half.
It also scored the first six points of the second half, and added a 7-0 run later in the third quarter as the blowout continued. The defense again played strong in the fourth quarter, holding the Thunderbirds to just four points.
“I thought we’d have more resistance from them,” said Roessner of LCC, which turned the ball over 29 times. “Everything we did seemed to work defensively.”
Stein scored half of her points on steals which led to fast breaks as she finished with 16 points. She shot 7-of-10 and also had team highs of seven rebounds and five assists.
Vicki Roessner shot 5-of-7 to join her in double figures with 10 points. Sara Fortkamp scored nine points, Krystal Rammel added eight and Megan Wenning scored seven.
Tiff Gaerke followed Stein with six rebounds, and Fortkamp and Rammel each added five.
The victory improved the Indians to 14-5 on the season, giving them a chance to surpass last season’s regular-season win total with a victory over Parkway in the season finale Thursday.
“You’ve just got to give them credit,” said Roessner. “They keep working hard. They’re earning it.”
No one on the LCC squad even came close to Fisher, who also led her team with eight rebounds while adding two blocks and one assist. Katie Lamoreau and Ashley Crow finished second to her in scoring with just four points apiece as the Thunderbirds shot just 24 percent.
LCC also lost sophomore Shaina Dugan to an injury to her right knee near the end of the first quarter.
Junior varsity
The Fort Recovery JV team blew the game open in the fourth quarter to win its season finale 45-32 over Lima Central Catholic.
The Indians, who finished 16-3, led by just two points at the half. They proceeded to outscore the Thunderbirds 18-8 in the third period to pull away.
Val Fortkamp and Jill Pottkotter scored 11 points apiece to lead the effort. Fortkamp also had four assists and two steals.
Sam Staugler notched eight points and six rebounds, and Abby Niekamp had seven points, six boards and two assists.
Renee Wurth posted 10 points for LCC. Kristen Gasperetti had six points and four rebounds.[[In-content Ad]]
