FORT RECOVERY - Their offensive effort wasn't exactly impressive.
But the Fort Recovery Indians' defense was that and then some.
The Indians, shutting down visiting St. Marys all night and riding the offensive play of Greg Kahlig and Clint Tobe, improved to 5-1 overall - and 2-0 in Midwest Athletic Conference play - with a 44-35 victory Friday at Fort Site Fieldhouse.
Kahlig scored a game-high 17 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the field, while Tobe added 15 for the Indians, who will be back on their home court tonight against Spencerville.
Despite shooting just 30 percent for the game, the Indians were in control most of the way, taking a 21-15 halftime lead they extended to 34-23 heading into the fourth quarter.
St. Marys, which was led by Michael Schmitmeyer (15 points) and Cory Menker (12), made just 26 percent of its field goal attempts Friday (14-for-47) - including a 7-for-27 effort from 3-point range.
Fort Recovery also enjoyed a big advantage at the free throw line Friday, connecting on 13-of-22 attempts. The visiting Roughriders went to the line just four times, hitting all of their attempts.
Toby Metzger contributed a game-high 12 rebounds and four assists for the Indians.
In junior varsity action Friday, Fort improved to 4-2 with a 58-33 victory.
Kyle Post led the FRHS reserve team with 12 points, while Cody Fiely added 11.
