Fort downs Flyers (01/26/07)

FRHS girls basketball

MARIA STEIN, Ohio - The Indians can finally erase that last name off their blackboard.

The current group of Fort Recovery girls basketball seniors had racked up 64 career wins going into Thursday night's action, but none against Marion Local. Now they have finally knocked off their nemesis after a 47-34 victory over the Flyers.

The Tribe was 0-5 against Marion Local over the last three seasons, a drought which included a loss to the Flyers in the district championship game last season. But the 2007 meeting belonged to Fort Recovery (14-2), which never trailed after scoring the final six points of the opening half.

Marion Local, which is 2-13 this season after graduating key seniors from last year's regional squad, hung with the Division IV No. 3 Tribe for a while, even leading by three in the second quarter. But a couple of three-point plays in the final minute of the opening half turned the game in the visiting team's favor.

The Indians trailed 16-15 with 57 seconds to play, but Sara Fortkamp buried a 3-pointer off fellow senior Vicki Roessner's assist on the next possession. Then Roessner came up with a steal from the Flyers' Jodi Huelsman and converted on the other end despite being fouled. Roessner added the free throw and the quick six points pushed Fort Recovery to a 21-16 lead at the half.

The Tribe added the first five points of the second half on a 3-pointer by Holly Stein and a jumper from Roessner by way of a Fortkamp assist, pushing the lead to 10.

Marion Local managed to pull within four on a couple of occasions in the third period, but it never got closer and the Indians led by at least eight throughout the fourth.

Stein had a double-double to lead the Indians, finishing with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Roessner joined her in double figures with 11 points while adding team highs of five steals and four assists.

Brittany Thobe finished with 12 points, four assists and four steals for the Flyers. Megan Barhorst had seven points, nine rebounds and five blocks off the bench.

Fort Recovery went wild in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 54-38 victory over the Flyers.

The Tribe (9-5) had a five-point lead going into the final period, when they racked up 18 points to Marion Local's seven. The Indians went to the foul line 34 times in the win, getting great efforts from Kelsey Brockman and Chelsey Leuthold (each 6-of-6) and Nicole Pottkotter (5-of-6).

Leuthold paced Fort Recovery with team highs of 14 points and seven rebounds to go with four steals. Brockman added 12 points, and Pottkotter had nine points and five assists.

Katrina Brand and Ashley Lochtefeld scored 16 and 13 points respectively for the Flyers, but no one else had more than four. Brand grabbed eight rebounds, and Lochtefeld had six boards.[[In-content Ad]]
