Fort drops in 2OT (01/07/08)

FRHS boys basketball

FORT RECOVERY - Overtime has not been kind to the Indians.

In its second game of the season against Wapakoneta, the Fort Recovery High School boys basketball team let a sizable lead slip away before losing to the visiting Redskins in overtime. Since then, its only loss came Friday night, playing without injured point guard Toby Metzger for the first time, on the road, against undefeated New Knoxville.

Overtime did the Indians in again Saturday.

Twice Fort Recovery had chances to win the game, but missed shots at the end of regulation and the first overtime before the Houston Wildcats cashed in for a 65-63 victory in double overtime.

Dan Estes hit the game-winning jumper for Houston (8-3) with three seconds left in the second extra session.

The Indians (9-3) faced a slight deficit for much of the second half on the night they inducted their second class to their athletic hall of fame, but pulled even at 52 when Bobby Rammel hit a pair of free throws with 59 seconds left. A turnover gave the Tribe a chance at victory, but a jumper by Greg Kahlig in the closing seconds missed its mark.

Fort Recovery led twice in the first overtime, only to have the Wildcats pull even on each occasion. Again it went to Kahlig, but the sophomore couldn't convert and desperation 3-pointer from Houston's Travis Mullen was also no good.

The squads traded the lead a couple of times in the second overtime, but the score eventually was tied again when Indian senior Clint Tobe split a pair of free throws with 57 seconds left. Houston then held off the last shot, which Estes converted with three seconds on the clock. Fort Recovery called a time out to set up a final attempt, but a desperation triple from Kahlig missed as time expired.

Estes and Dustin Schwable powered the Wildcats to victory.

Schwable shot 7-of-13 from the field and 9-of-12 from the line for 23 points. He also had a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with team bests of three assists, three steals and two blocks.

Estes was 7-of-14 shooting as he totaled 18 points and seven rebounds.

Despite the couple of missed game-winning chances, Kahlig racked up 25 points on 50 percent shooting. Rammel also shot 50 percent as he scored 19 points, and Tobe finished with 12 points, six rebounds and five assists.

Tyler Jutte grabbed five rebounds, Frank Thien had five steals and Kahlig dished out four assists.

Junior varsity

The Indians built a six-point halftime lead and held on for a 47-44 victory over Houston.

Kyle Post shot 6-of-8 from the field to lead a balanced effort for Fort Recovery with 12 points. He also grabbed eight rebounds.

Craig Tobe finished with eight points and six rebounds, Brady Kahlig scored eight points, Cody Fiely had seven points and Josh Wendel totaled six points and six rebounds. Matt Braun dished out six assists.

Matt Hughes had 12 points for the Wildcats, who shot just 34 percent compared to the Indians' 44 percent. Tyler Anderson added eight points, six steals and five rebounds.

Freshman

Fort Recovery fell just short of its first win of the year Saturday, losing 33-31 to the Houston Wildcats.

Shane Brunswick scored 19 points in trying to carry the Tribe to its first victory. The Indians led 9-6 after the opening quarter, but fell behind by a point at the half as they slipped to 0-5.

Ryan Link added seven points, and Elliott Post and Kyle Schmitz each had two.[[In-content Ad]]
