NEW BREMEN, Ohio — The Indians will get another chance to show the rest of the state how it’s done.
Fort Recovery handed the No. 6 New Knoxville Rangers their first, and only, loss of the season Jan. 12. Thanks to a 63-30 semifinal victory over the Spencerville Bearcats Tuesday night, the Tribe will meet New Knoxville again Saturday in sectional championship action at New Bremen.
Spencerville scored the first two points of Tuesday’s semifinal game, but their lead didn’t survive the first minute. Tiff Gaerke’s jumper put Fort Recovery (16-5) up for good just 25 seconds into the game as it rolled out to a 10-3 lead. The Indians led by 13 at the half and out-scored the Bearcats 31-11 after the break.
In addition to outstanding defense, Fort Recovery was bolstered by excellent guard play on the offensive end. Juniors Vicki Roessner and Sara Fortkamp combined to shoot 14-of-24 (58 percent) from the field, leading the way with 16 and 13 points respectively. Fortkamp added seven assists, and Joanna Snyder was 3-for-4 off the bench for seven points.
Holly Stein added nine points, and Abby Niekamp scored seven. Gaerke grabbed eight rebounds to lead a 30-21 Tribe advantage on the glass. Niekamp followed with seven rebounds, and Stein had six.
Stein led the defensive effort, coming up with eight steals as the Indians forced 34 Spencerville turnovers. The Bearcats were also limited to just 24 percent shooting in the second half and 32 percent for the game.
Emily Kill was the lone Spencerville player in double figures with 12 points. Anna Raines had six points, 13 rebounds and two assists.
Fort Recovery will seek its first sectional title since 2002 when it meets New Knoxville at New Bremen Saturday at 6:15 p.m.
New Knoxville was a perfect 10-0 and ranked eighth in the state when it met the Indians the first time at Fort Site Fieldhouse.
