Fort earns state award (04/21/07)

The Indians are the definition of student athletes.

Outstanding on the court as well as in the classroom, the 2006-07 Fort Recovery girls basketball team earned the Academic All-Ohio Team Award from the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association this week.

The award honored the teams in the state with the best overall grade point averages, based on the combined numbers of the top nine varsity letter winners. The Indians totalled a GPA of 3.92888, trailing only Logan Elm (3.95777) and Waynedale (3.96333).

The school will receive a plaque to commemorate the team's accomplishments.

One of Fort Recovery's Midwest Athletic Conference rivals, New Bremen, earned the award for its boys team.

The Tribe combined its academic and athletic excellence, opening 11-0 and ranked No. 1 in the state en route to a 19-4 record. It won a second straight sectional title before dropping out to eventual state runner-up New Knoxville in the district championship.

The OHSBCA presented the award to just five boys teams and five girls teams in the state of Ohio.[[In-content Ad]]
