FORT RECOVERY — Olivia Schwieterman has been at the foul line in pressure situations before.
She came through again Thursday.
Schwieterman hit a pair of free throws with 6.7 seconds left Thursday, locking up Division IV No. 10 Fort Recovery’s 45-41 Midwest Athletic Conference victory over the Coldwater Cavaliers.
“I know I missed a few earlier in the game and all I had to think was confidence is key,” said Schwieterman, who hit the game-winning free throw against Jefferson last season with no time remaining on the clock. “I had all the confidence in the world. I knew they were going to go in. There was no doubt.”
Fort Recovery led for a stretch of about 22 minutes, but fell behind by four with just 2:14 to play. However, a Chelsea Pottkotter hoop closed the gap to two points and then the seniors took over.
Kylie Kahlig, who had 13 points in the first half, hit her only field goal of the second with a 3-pointer to reclaim the lead for the Indians with 1:42 to go. Ericka Lennartz added a pair of free throws with 55 seconds left, and eventually Schwieterman ended up at the line in the closing moments with the Indians nursing a two-point lead.
She hit both of her free throws to extend the Tribe lead to four, putting the Cavaliers (7-3, 3-1 MAC) away.
The win knocked Coldwater from the list of undefeated teams in the MAC, leaving the Indians (9-1, 4-0 MAC) and Marion Local (8-2, 4-0 MAC) tied atop the league.
“This is definitely a big win,” Schwieterman said. “There were three of us tied for the MAC lead. We knew this was a game we needed to win. We had to put our heart and soul into it and we came out on top.”
The Tribe controlled most of the first half, finishing the second quarter on an 11-3 run for a 10-point halftime lead. But it struggled to score in the third quarter, getting just one field goal — a 3-pointer by Kelsey Fiely — as Coldwater clawed back.
The Cavaliers pulled even with 5:20 to go in the fourth quarter, and then pushed to a 40-36 lead on a 3-pointer by freshman Sarah Kanney with 2:14 to play before Fort Recovery recovered for the win.
“I told the kids last year we played over there and we beat them by five and we just couldn’t shake them all night long,” said FRHS coach Doug Bihn. “They just kept coming at us and kept coming at us. … This is a good team. … I wouldn’t want to play them down the stretch. … They’re relentless …”
Coldwater struggled to just 23 percent shooting, but got a big lift from Kanney. She buried four 3-pointers and scored 18 points.
“She’s hit some big shots all year,” said Coldwater coach Nick Fisher. “She’s not afraid to put herself in a position to take those shots. We just tell her to keep shooting. She has some struggles shooting-percentage wise in the first half, but she’s going to hit them eventually …”
Kahlig scored eight of the Indians’ first 11 points and finished with a team-high 16 on 7-of-11 shooting. She fell just short of a double-double with nine rebounds.
Chelsea Pottkotter followed with eight points, and Schwieterman had six assists.

Turnovers and fouls crushed the Indians, who lost 40-38 despite limiting Coldwater to just 19 percent shooting.
Fort Recovery committed 39 turnovers and 27 fouls in the game, leading the Cavaliers to attempt 22 more field goals and 14 more free throws than the Tribe. Coldwater outscored the Indians 19-9 at the foul line.
Tori Lennartz carried FRHS, shooting 50 percent from the field and finishing with 17 points, 10 rebounds and three steals. Kara Jutte added eight points.
Lauren Leugers went 5-of 6 from the field and scored 17 points to lead Coldwater while the rest of her team was a combined 5-of-47 (11 percent).[[In-content Ad]]
