COLDWATER, Ohio — A third-quarter rally led to a sweet fourth quarter victory Friday for the Fort Recovery Indians.
The Fort, down 10 at halftime against the Coldwater Cavaliers, stormed back into contention in the third period then held on for dear life as it scored a thrilling 82-81 victory.
Fort Recovery (6-12 overall, 3-5 Midwest Athletic Conference), was paced by a game-high 24 points from forward John Bihn and never trailed after the opening minute of the fourth quarter. But it wasn’t easy.
Up five with 10 seconds to play after a steal and back-to-back Bihn free throws, Fort Recovery survived a frantic rally by the Cavaliers (7-11, 4-5 MAC).
The Indians’ Ryan Staugler, sent to the line for two with eight seconds to play and his team up three after a quick score by Coldwater, missed the first but hit the second to put his team back up by four points.
It turned out that Fort had one to spare, as Coldwater’s Chad Geier drained a 3-point shot as time expired.
The two Midwest Athletic Conference rivals traded the lead three times in the final two minutes of the third period, and were tied on four occasions in the fourth. Bihn put his team ahead for good with 1:17 to play when he scored off a feed from Dusty Tobe.
C.J. Tobe and Dusty Tobe each chipped in 12 points on a balanced night for Fort Recovery. Teammates Sean Kahlig and Greg Faller had nine and eight points, respectively, with Faller totaling eight assists in the game.
Seven rebounds by Dusty Tobe and six each by Travis VanSkyock and Bihn helped the Indians to a 29-22 advantage on the boards.
VanSkyock hit a pair of free throws with 44 seconds left to put Fort up 79-76, and Bihn, who missed a pair of free throws with 23 seconds remaining, atoned by making the two crucial attempts with 10 seconds left.
Coldwater also had balanced scoring, with 16 points from Geier, 13 by Craig Wellman, 12 from Craig Koesters and 11 from Jeff Grieshop.
Coldwater won Friday’s junior varsity game 54-36. Tyler Thobe led Fort with 14 points.
