Fort extends hot streak against Spencerville (05/19/08)

SPENCERVILLE, Ohio - Suddenly the Indians are on fire.
Less than two weeks ago the Fort Recovery High School softball team was 5-15 and expected to bow out of the sectional tournament in the opening round. With a pair of wins Saturday - 1-0 in nine innings and 8-4 over the Spencerville Bearcats - the team has won five of its last six games, including the sectional championship.
Val Fortkamp and Kinsey Wenning keyed the opening win, with Wenning tossing yet another gem. She scattered three hits and five walks while striking out five as she tossed all nine innings.
Fortkamp played the hero in the top of the ninth as she scored the game's only run. She finished 2-for-4 with a double and two stolen bases.
Ashley Grube, Bekah Brunswick, Jessica Siegrist and Wenning added one hit apiece.
The Tribe offense got going in the second game, with Fortkamp finishing 2-for-2 with two runs. Kelly Sudhoff had a triple, a single a run and an RBI, Beth May scored twice, and Grube had a run and an RBI.
May picked up the win for Fort Recovery (10-16), allowing four runs - three earned - on four hits and two walks.
The Indians play in the Division IV district semifinal action against Parkway Tuesday at New Bremen at 5 p.m.
Junior varsity
FORT RECOVERY - The Indians piled up 20 runs in the second inning of Saturday's opening game as they swept Spencerville 26-0 and 14-4, both in five innings.
Olivia Thien was 3-for-3 with a triple and a home run in the opener, and Shelby Vaughn also went 3-for-3. Shelby Brunswick, Carly Saugler, Kendra Brunswick and Andi Sutter all added doubles in the victory.
Sutter earned the win, tossing a one-hit shutout. She walked four batters and struck out four.
Shelby Brunswick added three hits and three runs in the second game, and Kendra Brunswick was 2-for-3 with a double and four runs. Thien had two doubles and a triple, and Sutter was 3-for-3.
Shelby Brunswick was also the winning pitcher as just one of the four runs against her was earned. She gave up two hits and six walks while striking out six.
