Fort falls in district (05/24/08)

FRHS baseball

COLDWATER, Ohio - Half an inning into the championship game of the Division IV district baseball tournament, the Fort Recovery Indians had to be feeling pretty good.

Half an inning later, that feeling had changed dramatically.

The Indians, who put two runs up in the top of the first Friday against Delphos Jefferson, allowed the first six Wildcat batters to reach in the bottom of the first - with all of them eventually coming around to score.

Jefferson (18-6) added three more runs in the second and four more in the third on the way to a 15-7 victory over the Indians.

Fort Recovery, which closes the year with a 12-12 record, had 12 hits in Friday's game but struggled defensively as it committed seven errors.

With the win, the Wildcats advance to the Huber Heights Wayne regional.

Fort's promising start in the first got going with a lead-off single from Curt Heitkamp and an RBI double from Cody Fiely. Fiely advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on a bunt single by Travis Hart to give the Indians a quick 2-0 lead.

But it was a lead that didn't last long, as the first six Wildcat batters in the bottom of the first reached on three hits, two errors and a hit batter.

Aaron Schuerman, who was 4-for-4 in the game, had the big hit of the inning for Jefferson with a two-run double.

Cory Bastian, Josh Miller and Taylor Hesseling each added three hits in a 17-hit attack for Jefferson.

Heitkamp led Fort Recovery's effort by going 4-for-4. He also scored three of the Indians' seven runs.

Fiely was 2-for-3, while Hart added a pair of hits. Derek Koester, Elliot Post, Frank Thien and Toby Metzger each had one hit each for the Indians.

Taking the loss on the mound for the Indians was A.J. Backs, who faced the first five batters of the game without retiring anyone. Backs was charged with four runs (three earned) while giving up three hits.

Heitkamp pitched 2 2/3 innings, allowing eight runs (six earned) and eight hits while striking out four, walking one and hitting one batter.

Also taking the mound for the Indians were Fiely (2 1/3 innings, three runs, three its, one strikeout and one walk) and Thien (1 inning, two hits, two strikeouts, no runs).[[In-content Ad]]
