WAPAKONETA, Ohio - It was a bad time for everything to go wrong.

Fort Recovery High School's girls basketball team had won nine of its last 11, finished third behind two state-ranked squads in the Midwest Athletic Conference and earned the No. 1 seed in its sectional. But with the sectional championship on the line, the Indians simply could not score.

They went more than seven minutes without a basket in the fourth quarter and totaled just eight points in the second half in a 35-26 loss to the New Knoxville Rangers in the first of the two sectional title games Saturday at Wapakoneta.

Despite struggling in the third quarter, the Indians were still within one point after Chelsey Leuthold scored on a put-back with 7:22 remaining in the game. Unfortunately, they didn't score for the next 7:07.

New Knoxville (13-9) responded with a hoop from Bethany Howe to push the lead back to three points, and then both teams went cold. The score remained 27-24 for more than four minutes until Casey Horstman finally hit a free throw with 2:06 remaining.

The Rangers did the remainder of their scoring from the free-throw line while Fort Recovery (14-7) struggled. The Indians turned the ball over on three straight possessions after the Howe jumper, and had four turnovers and six missed shots during the seven minutes of offensive futility. They finally scored on a Kelsey Wuebker jump with 15 seconds remaining for the final margin.

Fort Recovery hit just 4-of-16 (25 percent) in the second half and was 0-for-14 from 3-point range in the game. It also made just two trips to the free-throw line.

Morgan Reineke paced New Knoxville, which lost 54-46 to the Indians on Jan. 3, as she shot 5-of-7 from the field and scored 15 points. Brooke Niemeyer was 4-of-8, including 2-of-3 from long distance, for 10 points.

Niemeyer had five rebounds and two steals, and Reineke added four rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Joanna Snyder was the only Indian in double figures, shooting 4-of-8 and scoring 10 points. Leuthold followed with six points, and a team-best four rebounds. Wuebker had three assists, and Snyder totaled three steals.[[In-content Ad]]
