UNION CITY, Ohio — The Blackhawks picked the wrong time to get in the way.
Coming off another difficult loss to Marion Local, the Fort Recovery girls basketball team handed Mississinewa Valley a beating Saturday. The Indians scored the first 16 points and cruised to an 83-29 victory.
Eight players scored six or more points for Fort Recovery (12-3), which didn’t allow a Blackhawk field goal for the first 5:30 of the game. The Indians were up 23-5 after the first quarter, and pushed the lead to 28 points at halftime in the rout.
Tiff Gaerke continued her amazing stretch with her seventh double-digit rebound game in a row and her fifth straight double-double. She had 18 points on 9-of-13 shooting and grabbed 13 boards to lift her season averages to 11.7 points and 10.5 rebounds per game.
She led the squad to an amazing 55-25 advantage on the glass.
Holly Stein went 5-of-8 from the field, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range for 13 points, and Sara Fortkamp added 10 points. They were followed by Lauren Wenning with nine points, Vicki Roessner and Abby Niekamp with eight apiece, Sam Staugler with seven and Joanna Snyder with six.
Niekamp had 10 rebounds, and Ciera Rammel finished with six assists.
The Blackhawks (6-11), who had 29 turnovers compared to 15 for Fort Recovery, shot just 3-of-17 (18 percent) in the first half and finished at 23 percent for the game. They were led by eight points apiece from Kelley Livingston and Kayla Neargarder.
Junior varsity
The Indians dominated the opening half on the way to a 39-20 victory over Mississinewa Valley.
Fort Recovery went up 15-6 after the opening quarter, and held the Blackhawks to just two second-quarter points. It was up by 18 at halftime as Mississinewa Valley shot just 2-of-16 (12 percent) in the opening half and 21 percent for the game.
Jill Pottkotter went 6-of-12 from the field for her game-high 13 points. She also had three blocks.
Kelsey Wuebker finished with eight points and three assists, and Anne Koesters and Rachel Tobe each grabbed seven rebounds.
Samantha Keen and Whitney Harmeson finished with six points apiece for the Blackhawks.[[In-content Ad]]
