Fort grad powers ONU

The Polar Bears had earned three victories over nationally-ranked opponents already this season.
On Saturday, a Fort Recovery graduate nearly led them to a fourth.
Nicole Pottkotter racked up 49 assists for the Division III 18th-ranked Ohio Northern University volleyball team, which fell just short in a 25-12, 23-25, 25-23, 13-25, 15-12 loss to No. 25 Concordia at the Wittenberg Border Battle tournament.
Pottkotter also came up with eight digs, one block and one kill for the Polar Bears, who are now 7-7. In other tournament action, she had 19 assists, seven digs, one block and one ace in a five-game loss to Alma and two kills and two blocks in a five-game loss to fourth-ranked Calvin.
The freshman totaled 30 assists, four digs, three kills, three blocks and an ace in ONU’s win Tuesday over Transylvania.
Pottkotter has averaged 35 assists in her three matches this season and has a total of 125 in six matches overall. She also has 22 digs, nine blocks, seven kills and three aces.
Allison Beitler
South Adams - 2010
Turned in the No. 2 time for the Goshen College women’s cross country team Friday at the Indiana Intercollegiate Championships at Purdue.
Beitler finished the 5K in 21 minutes, 12.9 seconds for the Maple Leafs and was 45th among small-school competitors. She was 115th overall in a field that included 179 runners.
Tiff Gaerke
Fort Recovery - 2007
Helped the Division I No. 20 University of Dayton volleyball team to a 25-14, 25-14, 25-11 victory Saturday over Delaware.
Gaerke recorded a couple of kills for the Flyers, who are now 9-3. She has seven kills, two blocks and a dig this season.
Amanda Johnson
Jay County - 2008
Ran for the Indiana Wesleyan University women’s cross country team as it finished second Saturday in the Cedarville Friendship Invitational.
Johnson turned in a 35th-place finish in the race with a time of 20 minutes, 7.2 seconds. She was the No. 6 runner for the runner-up Wildcats in the 5K race.
Maddie Moore
South Adams - 2009
Had one shot on goal for the Bluffton University women’s soccer team Tuesday in a 2-1 loss to Olivet.
Moore recorded one of the Beavers’ seven shots on goal in the defeat.
She also took one shot Saturday in Bluffton’s 2-1 loss to Huntington.
Sam Heckard
South Adams - 2010
Competed for the Bethel College men’s cross country team Saturday at the Knight Invitational hosted by Calvin College.
Heckard was the No. 6 runner for the Pilots and finished 183rd overall in 30 minutes, 10 seconds in the 8K race.
Frank Thien
Fort Recovery - 2009
Played for the Division III No. 11 Ohio Northern University football team as it rolled to a 34-10 victory over Otterbein.
