Fort jumps to 5-2 in the MAC (10/11/06)

ST. HENRY, Ohio - A Midwest Athletic Conference title is out of reach. But the Indians are keeping their hopes of a second-place finish alive.
The Fort Recovery volleyball team came back from 1-0 and 2-1 game deficits to defeat the St. Henry Redskins 18-25, 25-16, 19-25, 25-14, 15-11 Tuesday and improve to 5-2 in the MAC.
Division III No. 2 Versailles is unbeaten in the conference for a two-game lead, but the Indians would guarantee themselves at least a share of second place with wins over New Bremen Thursday and Coldwater Tuesday.
Tiff Gaerke's 28 kills led the Tribe offense against St. Henry, which was 13th in the Division IV voting in the poll released Monday. Gaerke also had 17 digs.
Vicki Roessner finished with 18 digs and 10 points, and Abby Niekamp had 39 assists and four blocks. Brittany Brackman scored 12 points, Rachel Stahl had 10 points, Kinsey Wenning finished with 10 kills and Joanna Snyder had three blocks.
Fort Recovery, which jumped to 11th in the Division IV voting this week, has won seven of its last eight matches to improve to 14-6. That stretch includes wins over Division IV No. 1 Marion Local, Division IV No. 5 Old Fort and Division II No. 9 Ottawa-Glandorf.
Junior varsity
The Indians stayed above .500 with a 25-13, 25-22 victory Tuesday over St. Henry.
Kelsey Wuebker had 11 points, eight assists and five kills to pace Fort Recovery, which pushed its record to 8-6. Anne Koesters had six kills and four blocks, and Beth May finished with six points and six digs.
Heather Schmackers had 11 digs, Nicole Pottkotter totaled 10 assists and Kelly Sudhoff had seven blocks.
Freshman
FORT RECOVERY - The Tribe pushed its record to 14-5 with a 25-17, 25-20 victory Tuesday over the Versailles Tigers.
Emily May had team highs of five kills and two blocks. She also added 11 points and two digs.
Sarah Knapke finished with 12 points and two digs, Josie Guggenbiller had 11 assists and two digs and Lorraine Shier totaled four kills and a pair of blocks. Chelsey Leuthold also had four kills, and Alyssa Brackman came up with four digs.
Junior high
Fort Recovery's eighth grade volleyball team defeated the visiting New Bremen Cardinals 25-14, 25-19 Tuesday. The seventh graders dropped their final match of the season 25-20, 25-17.
Holly Thien paced the eighth grade squad with eight points, three kills and a block. Olivia Thien had nine points and four kills, and Holly Brunswick finished with six assists.
Olivia Schwieterman and Kylie Kahlig each had six points for the seventh grade team, which finished at 5-9. Kara Faller added two kills.[[In-content Ad]]
